A step-by-step guide to upcycling:

Find out here how you can make lanterns and Christmas presents out of old tin cans and paint buckets.

  • Tins
  • Nail
  • Pen
  • Template
  • Adhesive tape
  • Paint (colour of your choice)
  • Bottle
  • Newspaper
  • Parcel tape
  • Cardboard
  • Tealight
  • Gloves
  • Mask for spraying

Step 1: Preparing the work surface for hammering

If you use old food tins, first remove the label. It should be possible to remove all adhesive residues completely with warm soapy water.

First of all, use the plastic bottle and the newspaper to make a support structure for the tin can. To do this, wrap the newspaper around the plastic bottle. Now stick this to the table with the parcel tape. You can then put the tin can over it so that it does not slip off the table when they are being hammered.

Place the cardboard under the construction to protection the surface in case you slip with the hammer and nail.

Step 2: Hammering Christmas patterns into the tin can

Draw small dots on your stencil, always following the lines. The dots will show you later where exactly you have to hammer the hole. Now stick the template onto the can using the adhesive tape. Make sure to apply the stencil accurately. Place the nail on the pre-marked point and carefully hit the nail with the hammer, holding it firmly. Then repeat the process until the nail is through the can. Then you can carefully pull the nail out of the hole and line it up with the next dot.

Repeat until the complete pattern has been hammered into the can. At the end, carefully pull off the template. If the can has a few dents, carefully hammer from the inside to remove them.

Step 3: Preparation for spraying the lanterns

As your spray area should remain free from paint, we recommend covering the work table and all other work areas. You can use newspaper, dust sheets or old cardboard for this. We have a little extra tip for you: simply place an extra box at the head of the work surface. This creates a spray chamber and any paint mist will be captured.

Now the colour of your choice can be added to the container after it has been stirred using the stirring stick. You may still need to thin the paint or varnish. You can easily find out by doing a test spray. Use a cardboard box for this. To protect not only your work surface, but also you when spraying, we recommend wearing a respirator mask and gloves as well as safety goggles while working with a sprayer.

Step 4: Spray the lanterns

Now the most exciting part begins – the spraying! Use the StandardSpray attachment to apply the paint at an even pace and spray at a distance of approx. 20 cm from the can. If you spray too close to the can, paint runs may appear.

Tip: To get a perfect coat of paint without finger marks, simply take a bottle, wrap newspaper around it and put the can over it.

Now let the freshly painted cans dry completely!

How to remove wallpaper

How to remove wallpaper

If you ever feel the need to update your wallpaper or you simply want to get rid of it, keep in mind that removing it presents a chance for a fresh start. When equipped with the appropriate tools the job becomes doable, and the outcomes will be rewarding. Utilise our guide filled with valuable suggestions, in conjunction with our steam wallpaper remover SteamForce to begin this process of creative revitalisation.

Wagner SteamForce

Tools & Equipment required

  • SteamForce Wallpaper Steamer
  • Craft knife, fork or perforation tool and possibly a metal ruler
  • Spatula
  • Dropsheets for floors and furniture
  • Masking tape ideally combined with a plastic sheet for light switches and sockets
  • Jug for water
  • Gloves and goggles
  • Rubbish bags

Step 1 - Prep

Before beginning the process of stripping wallpaper, it’s essential to take measures to minimise the mess. Covering everything in the room will make the cleanup much easier once the task is completed.

If possible, clear the room of furniture to facilitate movement but if this isn’t feasible moving the furniture to the center of the room and covering it with drop sheets for protection is advisable. Additionally, don’t forget to safeguard your floors. Opting for Wagner’s dropsheets can provide protection against water spills.

Ensuring your safety is also crucial. It’s important to cover lights, switches, and sockets to prevent any damage. Using masking tape or a combined masking tape and drop sheets can expedite the process and provide effective coverage.

Step 2 - Wall Prep

Remember to clear all items from the walls, such as hooks or nails.

If the wallpaper has a vinyl finish or has been painted, begin by scoring the paper with a craft knife or an old kitchen fork, being careful not to damage the wall and plaster underneath. Perforating the paper will allow steam to penetrate the wallpaper more quickly and loosen the wallpaper paste.

If there are multiple rooms to strip in your home, it’s best to use a wallpaper scoring tool to speed up the process. If you’re only dealing with the ceiling or a single wall, cut along the edge using a knife and metal edge between the two surfaces to avoid unintentionally removing paper you want to keep.

Step 3 - Fill the steamer

Start by carefully reading the instruction manual for the wallpaper steamer and paying close attention to the safety instructions. Then, follow the manual’s guidance to set up the steamer properly.

Place the wallpaper steamer on top of an old piece of wood or a metal tray to protect the floor underneath and ensure that the steamer remains level, preventing any damage to the heating element.

For a quicker wallpaper removal process, fill the steamer with warm tap water to expedite the boiling time. Using a jug can make it easier to pour the water into the steamer. After filling it up, plug in the steamer and wait for the water to boil. Once you see steam coming from the steam plate, the steamer is ready to be used.

Step 4 - Start at the top

Commence from the top of the wall and progress downwards. When dealing with high walls or reaching the ceiling, use a standard or platform ladder ensuring that the unit remains flat and stable.

Hold the steam plate against the wallpaper for no more than 30 seconds at a time. The steam will seep through the wallpaper, loosening it from the wall by moistening the old adhesive paste underneath. After steaming an area, test the ease of removing the paper. Utilise a scraper to get underneath the paper and scrape it off. If the paper is not coming off easily, reapply the steam plate to the surface, being cautious not to leave it for too long as this may cause damage to the underlying surface.

Step 5 - Safety

Exercise caution when working around sockets or switches. A small steam plate can be beneficial in limited spaces. Try to remove as large a piece of wallpaper as possible, as this will expedite the process and minimise the need for extensive cleanup.

When working overhead, beware of hot dripping water from the steam plate. It’s important to wear long sleeves, gloves and glasses and position yourself to one side of the steam plate, not directly under it.

Step 6 - Keep tidy

If the paper is left to dry it can stick to itself and the dust sheet which makes it more difficult to remove so tidy as you go.
Also periodically look and check the water level.

Do not allow it to run dry as this will cause the automatic cut off switch to activate and temporarily cut the power to the machine. This will interrupt your work and can damage the unit.

What is HVLP?

What is HVLP?

Have you ever wondered what “HVLP” stands for?

Well, it stands for “high volume low pressure”, which refers to a paint spray system that uses a high volume of air at low pressure to achieve a fine and even spray pattern with minimal spray mist. Read on for full details.

How does spraying with HVLP work?

  1. The turbine generates air flow that moves into the container and out through the gun nozzle.
  2. As the air flows into the paint container, it compresses the air inside the container and pushes the paint through the suction tube towards the nozzle.
  3.  The high air volume and low air pressure work together to atomise the paint into fine particles at the nozzle outlet, creating the spray jet.
  4.

When using the nozzle, both the paint particles and the air stream are released together. This creates a “jacket” of air around the paint particles, which reduces the amount of spray mist and results in less material waste. As a user, you can enjoy better paint coverage and less material loss with this technology.

It is important to note that HVLP spraying produces larger micro paint particles compared to airless spraying due to the lower pressure used. This distinction may not be visible to the naked eye, but it is crucial to be aware of the differences between airless and HVLP to select the most appropriate sprayer for your project.

Which materials are suitable for HVLP sprayers?

Different materials can be sprayed with the HVLP paint sprayers.
We have prepared an overview for you here:

The following can be processed:

  • Varnishes and glazes
  • Interior Wall Paints
  • Exterior Paints
  • Primers
  • Wood stains
  • Oil based paint

It’s important to keep in mind that not all materials can be sprayed using WAGNER’s HVLP paint sprayers. WAGNER offers a range of equipment that is specifically designed for certain applications and materials, ensuring you achieve the best outcome.

What should be considered when spraying with an HVLP paint spraying system?

To achieve a perfect spray painting finish, it’s essential to properly calibrate your equipment and dilute the material if needed. You should aim for smooth and even coverage, with no visible imperfections. Your success depends on various factors, including your sprayer, its settings, the type of material you’re using and your technique. To ensure the best outcome, we highly recommend that you carefully review the operating instructions for your sprayer and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for paint dilution and ensure the surface preparation has been thorough.Â
